BITONTO Bari (Puglia)
Food and wine
According to the tradition, Bitonto was founded by Illyrian king Botone: hence the place-name. A first settlement dates back to the Bronze age and it was a flourishing centre between the VI and the V century BC. When it came under Taranto’s influence it turned into a Greek town, although it kept its self-government, and then it was a Roman dominion. After the Barbarian invasions it came under Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Normans and Swabians. With Anjous Bitonto was ruled by some aristocratic families such as Caldora, Ventimiglia, Acquaviva, Cordova until 1522 when it became a free town beneath a remarkable payment. Since this moment it was considered the second most important Apulia town thanks to its flourishing business and art. On may 26th 1734 a battle between Austrians and Spanish took place just in Bitonto, the battle that affirmed the Bourbons’ victory. Later Bitonto was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Bitonto is renowned for its olive culture and especially for its production of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) olive oil, which is considered among the best quality olive oil in the world. Bitonto stands on a plain territory that rises up to the Murgia upper hills: in fact it’s part of the National Park of Murgia Upper Hills that is a natural reserve as well as “Lama Balice” (“Lama” is a karstic formation), regional park from 2007. Among the most interesting monuments there are the Romanesque Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Valentine, Sylos-Calò and Sylos Vulpano Palaces, the round tower (the only remain of the 13th century castle) and the city wall ruins all around the town.
