Since the Iron Age Converano was known as Norba. It was included in the Roman empire until its collapse. Then, during the V century, on Norba’s territory a new village rose and it was called Cupersanem. It was dominated by Normans and Aragoneses, which most important representative was Giangirolamo II Acquaviva, better known as “Guercio of Apulia”, whose history is mixed up with its enchanting legends.Informazioni turistiche comune di Conversano provincia di Bari
On a pleasant Murgia’s hill, 8 km far away from the sea, Conversano rises plunged into a rich country. Its historic centre is divided into three parts with an Aragonese castle dominating on it. From the castle, that overlooks on the big irregular central square, you can enjoy the whole beautiful landscape until the sea. The ancient religious power is still vivid in the Basilica and in the many convents and churches spread all around. In Conversano you will also find a sort of “lakes”: karstic sinkholes that turn into little lakes after drifting rains.
