Storia comune di Gioia Del Colle provincia di Bari
There is more than one story about Gioia del Colle origins. One of the most famous tells about the princess Bianca Lancia: before Frederick II, her husband, locked her up for betrayal in the tower of the Castle she lost all her jewels in the wood of the plateau where the town is situated and she never found them again. Hence the name of the town (“gioia” means also jewel and “colle” means “plateau”: “jewels of the plateau”). According to another story the name comes from “Joha”, that is the short form of the surname “Johannakis”, a byzantine family existing in that area during the middle age. The acropolis found in Monte Sannace, 6 km away from Gioia, shows that there was a first settlement in the VII century BC. But the modern town came up all around an ancient byzantine stronghold. It was a Norman and then Swabian fief and it became part of the Principality of Taranto. It actively participated for the Unification of Italy so that it’s reminded for the martyrdom of some citizens.

Gioia del Colle stands on a Murgia plateau, halfway from Adriatic sea and Ionian sea. The main highlights of a visit to Gioia del Colle is definitely the Castle: it was built by Normans and Fredrick II used it during his battues; it’s one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in the region. All around the castle there is the historic centre with lots of churches. Gioia del Colle is especially renowned for its productions of “primitivo” wine and of “fior di latte” mozzarella cheese.
