Storia comune di Gravina In Puglia provincia di Bari

The first settlements date back to the Neolithic age. Between the VIII and the IV centuries BC it was called “Sidion” and it was a flourishing centre thanks to the relationships with Greeks. It was conquered by Romans, that changed its name in “Silvium” and turned the town into an important farming centre. When it was destroyed by Vandals the inhabitants took refuge in the surrounding caves and thus the so called “rupestral civilization” started. After the dispute between Longobards and Byzantines, Gravina became a fief of Normans and of Swabians too: Fredrick II loved a lot this town, he used to call it “the delightful garden”. Then it was Anjous’ turn and they set up the Saint George fair, a very important farming fair to this day as well (it reached the 715th edition in 2009). In 1380 the Aragones handed the government over Orsini family that ruled until 1816. It followed then the Kingdom of Naples’ history until the Unification of Italy.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Gravina In Puglia provincia di Bari

Gravina is located on western Murgia hills, at the borderline between Apulia and Basilicata regions. Part of the town spreads over a ravine, a 100 and more meters rift dug into the calcareous rocks by a little river: hence the place-name (Gravina in Italian means ravine). It has always been a farming town, especially for wheat production, and it’s so important in Murgia territory that it’s the National Park of Murgia Upper Hills’ base. In the old town, in its labyrinth of narrow streets, there are lots of medieval houses and also the most interesting buildings such as the Swabian Castle ruins, the Cathedral-Basilica and the 1700 bridge that links the two river’s banks over the ravine. The modern town stands on the upland and it shows a grid pattern.
