Storia comune di Locorotondo provincia di Bari
Once it was called “Casale San Giorgio” then it turned its name into “Casale Rotondo”, then “Luogorotondo” and finally “Locorotondo” because of its round pattern (“loco” means “place” and “rotondo” means “round”). The first settlement dates back to IX-VII centuries BC, when a first round built-up area rose up in that territory. But the first document in which “the round place” is mentioned dates back to the XII century, under Swabian domination, when the town was a fief of the nearby Benedictine convent. From then on it turned into a “casale” (sort of hamlet”) and it was ruled by Anjous and barons’ families (Del Balzo-Orsini, Loffredo and Caraffa) until the Bourbons’ arrival when it followed the history of the Kingdom of Naples.

Locorotondo stands on a hill, plunged into the wonderful Itria Valley. Its historic centre, with its 130 ancient quarters (“contrade”), has a rounded pattern wrapped around Saint Giorgio church; it’s a very attractive town thanks to its whitewashed alleyways and to its houses with their characteristic peaked roofs (called “cummerse”) made of “chiancarelle” (chalky slabs). The flowered wrought iron balconies give a further enchanting appearance to Locorotondo so that now it’s included among the Italian most beautiful historic centers. It’s renowned for its fine white wine (“Locorotondo DOC”) and for its stuffed role of lamb’s tripe tied with the same lamb guts and boiled for a long time in terracotta (earthenware) pots.
