Storia comune di Molfetta provincia di Bari
Maybe the name Molfetta comes from the word “malf” that means pit, maybe referring to the karstic doline; but reliable documents identify “Melphicta” as original name. A first settlement dates back to Neolithic ages, but it was founded in Roman ages: some findings testify the presence of a IV century BC fishing village. The village grew during the Byzantine era, passing then in Longobards’s hands and resisting to the Saracens’ threat. It was an important maritime centre that traded with lot of Mediterranean towns and it keeps its importance with Normans, Swabians and Anjous as well, whereas with the Aragones started its decline. Then it came under Borbouns until the Unification of Italy.

Facing the Adriatic sea, Molfetta has always been linked to the sea. The town spreads on Saint Andrea peninsula in a herringbone pattern, between the port and the open sea. Its historic centre it’s a labyrinth of narrow streets and here is the cultural heritage of Molfetta: Saint Corrado Cathedral and Saint Peter Church stand all along the sea promenade, rounded by the medieval wall’s ruins. Attractive places are also the Basilica and the “pulo”, a karstic doline where there are some Neolithic findings. Its economy is based on agriculture (olive oil, wine and almonds productions) and industry (olive, wine and ship yard industry), but the driving sector of its economy is the sea fishing: Molfetta is one of the most important fishing port of Italy.
