NOICATTARO Bari (Puglia)
Food and wine
The town rose up between the XI and XII centuries as a little village called “Locus Noa” rounded by the city walls, protected by a tower and with a church only. It was ruled by Normans, Swabians and Carafa family until the abolition of feudal privileges. The town changed its name from Noja to the current Noicattaro after the Unification of Italy, as a symbol of self-renewal. But the original name it’s dear to the citizens: they still call the town “Nào” in dialect.
Noicattaro is situated on a plain territory and yet broken off with dolines, hollows and other karstic formations. The historic centre of Noja (the original name of the town) is developed all around the main Church and it’s a humble labyrinth of alleyways where it’s curios discovering tuff houses, often below the street level, and little squares and votive niches. Saint Maria della Lama church (nearby the bridge that links the two sides of the “lama”, a karstic formation) is one of the most important church in the town because, during the Holy week, it is the point of departure of the “crociferi”: hooded man that walk towards other churches to contemplate the sepulchers bringing a cross on their shoulders and wearing a chain at their ankles during the night of the Maundy Thursday.
