Storia comune di Polignano A Mare provincia di Bari
There are no sure documents about Polignano’s history and its name’s origin: probably it comes from the Greek “neapolis” that means “new town”. It was a blooming trade centre with Romans and Byzantines, but it gained a great importance thanks to Normans and the Benedictine monks of Saint Vito convent who improved its trades. Also Swabians, Aragones and Venetians took advantages of Polignano for trading with lots of Adriatic towns. It was then ruled by Bourbons and followed the history of the Kingdom of Naples until the Unification of Italy. Nowadays it’s renowned to be one of the main tourist destination in Apulia.

Polignano a Mare is an enchanting small town that overlooks the Adriatic sea on a 20 meters high spectacular cliff. According to an environmentalist Italian organization it offers well-equipped beaches and a clean sea with lots of grottoes, such as “Grotta Palazzese”, one of the most beautiful cave preserving the clear rocky sea. Going through a medieval arch (“Arco della vecchia porta”) you enter in the historic centre. Here alleyways, narrow streets, little white houses with stone outdoor staircases and flowered balconies follow one another to set up the old town which is still rounded by the city walls and opened into terraces offering enchanting landscapes on the sea that will take your breath away. In summertime the old town turns into a lively nightlife centre.
