Storia comune di Putignano provincia di Bari

Putignano’s origins are unsure. Some findings date the town back to the Graecia Magna and it was later a Roman dominion. During the dominations of Normans, Swabians and Anjous in Apulia, Putignano was a property of some Benedictine monks who improve the town’s conditions after the decline due to the Roman Empire’s collapse. In 1317 Putignano was ruled by Knights of Malta until the Spanish and then French conquest. It was then annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Putignano provincia di Bari

Putignano is renowned for its Carnival celebration, well known all over Italy (and not only Italy) to be one of the longest: it starts on 26th December and goes on until the Shrove Tuesday with the Carnival floats parade through Putignano streets and with the Carnival puppet burial. The town stands on three hills, on a calcareous territory that creates karstic phenomenon such as dolines, sinkholes and caves (not to miss the visit to “Grotta del trullo” –Trullo’s cave- or the caves in the near Castellana). From the main square the historic centre spreads out with its twisting narrow streets and its “corti”: courtyards originally equipped with community facilities and closed with a wooden or wrought iron street door. All around the historic centre there is a main street (built up on the ancient city wall) that separates the old town from the modern town. Putignano is renowned also for its textile factories specialized in ceremonial dress and for the papier mâché processing necessary for the Carnival floats production.
