RUTIGLIANO Bari (Puglia)
Food and wine
The name probably comes from the Latin name of person “Rutilius” or from the word “rutilus” that means “red-soil town” because of the clay present in that territory. Rutigliano stood on two pre-existing villages, Azetium and Bigetti. During the middle age it was subject directly to Rome and that was its best moment. Then it lost this privilege and it was under the Capitolo of Sain Nicola Cathedral in Bari who ruled until the abolition of feudal privileges.
Rutigliano is a small town, one of the most blooming centre of Bari’s province thanks to a rich farming activity specialized in dessert grapes production. In its historic centre the most interesting buildings are: Saint Maria della Colonna church (XII century), Palazzo Antonelli, a Reinassance palace and the municipal museum that hosts lots of local archaeological findings. Not to be missed a visit to the workshops of terracotta (earthenware) whistles, a typical product that makes Rutigliano renowned all over Apulia.
