ANDRIA Barletta-Andria-Trani (Puglia)
Business, Art and culture
There are lots of unsure legends about Andria’s history and its name’s origin. The first document in which Andria is named dates back to 915 AD. It was inhabited by Byzantines, Normans and Swabians, whose leading figure was Frederick II that managed to keep the faithfulness of Andria citizens. Throughout the XIV and the XV centuries Anjous and Aragones ruled through Del Balzo family and then Andria became part of the Kingdom of Naples until the Spanish conquest. The Spanish left the government in Carafa family hands until the XIX century. Then Andria followed the ups and downs of Italy until its unification.
Andria is one of the three chief towns of the new BAT province set up on 2004, with Barletta and Trani and it’s a very enchanting land, full of history and culture. It stands at the foot of Murgia hills, 10 km far away from Adriatic Sea, and it’s one of the Italian larger farming place thanks to its mild, aired and dry climate: oil, wine and dairy products are the most important productions. But in Andria there is also a flourishing secondary industry: food and textile industries. The old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets (in which there is also the world littlest alleyway) and it’s full of monuments: the Cathedral, the Ducal Palace, churches and convents. Furthermore Andria is part of the National Park of Murgia Upper Hills, but it’s especially renowned for Frederick II most famous castle: Castel del Monte, UNESCO site since 1996 because of its architectural and symbolic particularities.
