BARLETTA Barletta-Andria-Trani (Puglia)
Business, Art and culture
The town dates back to the IV century BC, but the first important date is the 216 BC when Hannibal defeated the Romans during the second Punic war. Throughout the Middle age, during the Norman domination, it was very important for the crusaders thanks to its port, and the Swabians and the Anjous hold its commercial role. Later with the Aragones Barletta became the Kingdom of Naples’ second important town. At this time the famous “Disfida di Barletta” (Challenge of Barletta) took place: it was 1503 and 13 French knights challenged 13 Italian knights in a battle to see which was the best army and the Italians won the fight. Since the XVII century started the decline: the town was badly managed from Spanish and natural disaster took place (earthquakes, pestilence). But it perked up during the two World Wars getting lots of medals and the bravery and the campaign awards.
Barletta is one of the three chief towns of the new BAT province set up on 2004, with Andria and Trani. It overlooks on the Adriatic Sea and it stands on Ofanto river valley, a river that has its importance for Barletta farming activities and that marks the border between Bari and Foggia’s lands and between the karstic Murgia hills and the rich Tavoliere plain. Both in the alleyways of the old town and in the main streets of the downtown you will admire lots of buildings belonging to different times: the cathedral, the castle, the bronze colossus, the “challenge tavern”, the Holy Sepulchre, lots of churches and palaces and the archeological site of Canne. That’s why in 2005 Barletta has been the Apulia Art City. One of the palaces, Palazzo della Marra, has now turned into the picture gallery of the impressionistic painter Giuseppe de Nittis, who was born in Barletta.
