BISCEGLIE Barletta-Andria-Trani (Puglia)
Business, Art and culture
According to some sources the name comes from “vigiliae” that means “sentry” referring to its position facing the Adriatic sea as a lookout. But reliable documents tell that the name comes from the dialect word “vescegghie” referring to a kind of oak planted in that area. The dolmens are the proof that the territory was inhabited since the prehistory. After the Roman Empire’s collapse it followed the ups and downs of Apulia’s history: Byzantines, Normans, Anjous (the most blooming moment), Aragoneses, Bourbouns until the Unification of Italy. Nowadays Bisceglie is a brisk farming and fishing centre.
Bisceglie is a lively seaside resort of Barletta-Andria-Trani province. In 2001 an environmentalist Italian organization declared Bisceglie as one of the Italian towns with clear sea and clean and well-equipped beaches. The seafront promenade it’s now a nightlife haunts for young people, not only in summertime. The town is situated in a natural bight so that there’s also an equipped fishing port. Bisceglie is very interesting for archaeological and architectural sides as well. Lots of dolmens are spread all around the territory (the most important one is the “Dolmen la Chianca”) and its historic centre it’s rich in buildings: the Cathedral, the Castle, the Normans’ tower. Furthermore all around the countries there are lots of abandoned ancient manors and farmhouses dating back to the Roman ages.
