CAROVIGNO Brindisi (Puglia)
Sun and sea, Art and culture, Nature and welness
The names comes from the greek “karpina” meaning “fructuous” and referring to the rich lands where Carovigno stands on. The town was a quiet important Messapian village until it was conquered by Taranto in 473 BC. It was part of the Roman Empire and then it was home for Longobards, Byzantines, Normans, Swabians and Anjous. Later it was a fief for lots of family until the last one, Imperiali family.
The small town of Carovigno stands between the Itria Valley and the upper Salento plain, in an area rich in olive and almond trees and vineyards. The town has a very old origin as shown by the ancient Messapian city walls now included in the Castle, built by Del Balzo-Orsini family in the 15th century. More interesting places to visit are: the historic centre, a medieval settlement still guarding the city walls ruins, and the Santa Maria Belvedere sanctuary built on two connected grottoes. In one of these grottoes there is a fresco representing a Virgin and Child dating back to 14th century. Seven km away from the town there are the seacoasts of Carovigno: Santa Sabina, Specchiolla and the most famous Torre Guaceto, which was a watchtower against Saracens raids and that now is an important natural and marine reserve.
