CELLINO SAN MARCO Brindisi (Puglia)
Food and wine
The names comes from the greek “celino” meaning the black colour of an olive quality, which the town is full of, and from the worship of the Saint Marco. The first settlements date back to the Eneolithic period. When the Saint Marco chapel was built the village spread and grew up. It was under lots of families as a fief until 1806, when the feudalism was abolished.
Cellino San Marco is a small town placed in Salento plain. It’s a vivid farming centre, indeed it’s very important for its oil, wine, grains and vegetables. All around the town really interesting buildings are the 16th century Castle, Chiesa Matrice and Contrada Mea, where lots of archaeological finds have been discovered.
