Storia comune di Cisternino provincia di Brindisi

The name comes from “Sturnoi”, the companion of Diomedes, who founded the town. It became a roman town and thus its name changed into “Sturnium”, but in 216 BC it was destroyed by Hannibal. In the 8th century some Basilian monks escaping from the East built their village on ancient Sturnium ruins, calling the new village “Cis-Sturnium” that means “over Sturnium”. The first document in which Cisternino appeared dates back to 1180 and it is a papal bull confirming its belonging to the bishop of Monopoli. In 1330 it was sold to an aristocratic family and it got back to the bishop after a century. From 1495 to 1528 it was under the Republic of Venice, then under the Aragoneses whose government was so unloved to lead citizens to the revolt until the Unification of Italy. Nowadays Cisternino is a renowned tourism centre especially thanks to its wine and oil routes.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Cisternino provincia di Brindisi

Cisternino overlooks the enchanting Itria Valley. It is surrounded by a swath of olive trees and it is dotted with the typical trulli houses. This lovely town is part of the Italian club “The Most Beautiful Villages In Italy”: this lovely little town is an example of “spontaneous architecture” designed following common sense and human relations; it is an historic centre where whitewashed houses and their private spaces are melted into the shared outdoor spaces. In the old town the most important historical buildings are the Norman-Swabian tower, that was the main entrance to the town, and the church of Saint Nicola, built in the 14th century on a previous Basilian church. A few km away from Cisternino there is the small sanctuary of the Madonna d’Ibernia, built just in the place shown by the Virgin after her apparition. All around the town the countries are dotted not only with trulli houses, but with fine farmhouses (“masserie”) as well.
