FRANCAVILLA FONTANA Brindisi (Puglia)
Art and culture
In 1310, during a battue, Philip I of Anjous found an icon of the Virgin and Child on a wall over a fountain. As act of worship he built a church in that place and granted lands and franchises to those who would have inhabited the surrounding area: hence the name of the town (“Francavilla” means “franchise town” and “Fontana” means “fountain”). It was previously inhabited by Messapians, as the archaeological finds show us, but it rises as a village in 1310. It was ruled as a fief by lots of family whose important one was the Imperiali family who gave a great impulse to the town development. Nowadays Francavilla Fontana is also known as “Imperiali town” indeed.
Francavilla Fontana is situated part on last Murgia hills and part on Brindisi plain. Its territory is calcareous so that there are lots of grottoes, canyons and underground rivers. All around the town there are still the ancient city walls just cut off by three medieval doors that were the entrance to the town. The masterful buildings here are the Imperiali Castle and the Chiesa Matrice in addition to the innumerable Baroque churches and palaces that you come upon taking a pleasant stroll in the historic centre.
