MESAGNE Brindisi (Puglia)
Art and culture
The name means “town in the middle” because it was strategically built halfway between Brindisi and Oria. From 3rd to 6th century BC it was an important Messapian centre, but it rose up as a town only between the 14th and the 15th centuries thanks to nobles and clergymen.
Mesagne stands in the inland parts of Brindisi, on a plain territory though its historical centre is situated on a gentle hill. Among the most important buildings there are the Castle, previously a defensive fortress and then turned into a mansion, and the Chiesa Matrice, one of the best example of Brindisi Baroque style.
