Oria’s original name was Hyria, but then it changed again and again; its origin it is unknown anyway. The town is supposed to be found by a group of shipwrecked Cretans. It was part of the Roman Empire, then it was under Byzantines and Lombards and it suffers the Saracens’ invasions. During the middle age there was a thriving Jewish population that brought a considerable economic and cultural development in Oria. Later it was ruled by Normans, Swabians and Anjous and then it became a fief for lots of important families such as Orsini-Del Balzo’s and Imperiali’s.
Halfway between Brindisi and Taranto, on the northern Salento hills, Oria stands offering its wonderful views of two coastlines: the Adriatic sea and the Gulf of Taranto. The wonderful Castle overlooks the town: it is a triangular shape structure built to the orders of Frederick II. The historic centre, surrounded by the medieval walls, guards ancient treasures such as the Cathedral, elegant palaces and the ruins of the old doors of the town. A few km away from the city there are some marks of rupestrian ages as Madonna della Scala and Madonna di Gallana churches. There are lots of traditions bound to the town, but the most important one certainly are the “palio” (medieval joust) and the medieval parade of Frederick II, events that every year attracts lots of tourists and visitors from everywhere. Thanks to these events, Oria is the town of the best flag flyers in Italy. The town is renowned as “Hazy Oria” because of a thin haze that sometimes covers the town and that recalls an old legend.
