SAN PANCRAZIO SALENTINO Brindisi (Puglia)
Food and wine
The name clearly refers to the Saint: a first village rose around a pre-existing church dedicated to Saint Pancrazio who was supposed to spend some days in this land during his trip to Rome. A first settlement in that area dates back to 8th and 3rd centuries BC. In the 1st century AC the settlement was abandoned and then used by Romans as stronghold. A new village rose up between the 10th and the 11th centuries and it was under the bishops of Brindisi until 1866. San Pancrazio as well suffered the Saracens’ attacks: the worst one was on January 1st 1547.
San Pancrazio Salentino rises on Salento plain. The most interesting buildings in town are the Chiesa Matrice dedicated to Saint Pancrazio and San Francesco and the Palazzo Baronale, built in 1221 and reworked on 1510, that was used by the bishops of Brindisi as a place where to spend their summers. The town is part of the National Association “Città del vino” (“Cities of wine”).
