Having seen the arrival of the Turks from the Square Tower, citizens rushed all together to defend the city by defeating enemies who, while fleeing, left their flags on the field. Every Sunday after Easter, the flag is put up at auction: the Mayor with the flag, followed by other authorities and the band, walk  and the people make their bids. A citizen who has made ??the highest bid wins the flag. Then the revenue is given to the Committee Patronal festival for the celebration in honor of the patron saint. Tradition has it that the winning bidder enjoys respect and reverence by fellow citizens throughout the period in which guards the flag. After the auction they're back in Piazza del Popolo, where the citizens in turn, starting from the winner, dancing pizzica and waving the flag.
