Storia comune di San Vito Dei Normanni provincia di Brindisi

The name comes from “Castri Sancti Viti”, the name of the fist settlement. It was already inhabited since the Messapian era, but the village dates back to the 10th century, probably founded by Schiavoni (a people coming from Croatia) or by Boemondo d’Altavilla that built the square tower of the castle. During the middle age it grew up thanks to the neighbouring peoples that took refuge from Saracens’ attacks in San Vito dei Normanni.

San Vito dei Normanni stands on a green plain surrounded by olive and almond trees and vineyards and offering the enchanting view of the Adriatic sea as a background. The bathing resort of Specchiolla is part of San Vito dei Normanni indeed. The town guards lots of historic marks: lately an archaeological area has been discovered showing a Messapian settlement. You can’t fail to visit the Castle Dentice di Frasso, built around the Norman square tower, where there is the chapel dedicated to Saint Vito (probably the first church of the first village) and then the Chiesa Matrice and all the other little rupestrian churches built up by Basilian monks that took shelter here during their escape from the East. A few km away from the town there is Torre Guaceto, an interesting natural and marine reserve.
