VILLA CASTELLI Brindisi (Puglia)
Nature and welness
he name origins are not sure: it is supposed to come from the Latin word “castellum”, meaning “small village”, or from the two castles existing in the town, the Castle of the farmhouse and the Palazzo Ducale that looks like a castle. As some archaeological finds show, the area was a stronghold of Taranto. At the end of the 18th century a noble bought all the territory and gave some plots to the neighbouring villages creating the existing town.
Villa Castelli is situated on last Murgia hills and overlooks the area of both Brindisi and Taranto: it is halfway from Ionian sea and Adriatic sea indeed, close to some lovely tourism places (Ostuni, Taranto, Alberobello...). The most interesting buildings to visit are the Chiesa Matrice, the Palazzo Ducale and the Castle of the Farmhouse Antoglia. The countryside all around the town is dotted with elegant farmhouses, while just in the middle of the town, as a breaking, there is a ravine with an underground oil mill and the botanical gardens.
