Towns in the district Gargano

Rocky mountains that leans on the Southern Adriatic Sea forms this Apulian Sub-region, called Gargano. The Mount Calvo is the highest mountain. Great part of the territory is mountainous but Gargano also has important plateaux, whose most famous one is the Foresta Umbra, a lot of plans of high trunk which seem the dome of an immense cathedral. The coast stretches for more than 100 kilometres among grottoes and drilled rocks that hide patches of sky. Gargano leans on the sea with little bays, creeks almost like little fiords, stacks and caves of different size. Rodi Garganico, Peschici, Vieste, Pugnochiuso, Mattinata, Manfredonia… these seaside places are full of history, scented of orange blossom, shadowed by imposing Aleppo pine trees which are reflected in the crystal-clear water of the promontory, embellished by the pearls of the Tremiti Islands. Gargano also means spirituality. In Monte Sant'Angelo stands up the Archangel Michael Basilica; in San Giovanni Rotondo rises the new church devoted to Padre Pio with the attached hospital “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” that is known all over the world and has been built by Padre Pio.
