Towns in the district Salento
Salento covers the Southern part of Apulia and for this reason is called the heel of Italy.
The peninsula salentina is located between the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea and it is limited by the so called “Messapic thresholdâ€, a hollow that runs through the Taranto-Ostuni line and divides Salento from Murgia. Its apexes are: Taranto, in the same province; Pilone, in the area of Ostuni in the province of Brindisi; Santa Maria di Leuca, in the province of Lecce.
Till 1927 Salento and a great part of the current provinces of Brindisi and Taranto made up the province of Terra d’Otranto.
This land is plunged into age-old olive groves, tobacco growing and vines. In this place the sea turns all the shades of blue that highlights the characteristic white of the houses and the Arabian-like towns, each one with its own dialect. This is an area of strong linguistic interest for its permanency of Greek people and for the preservation of the language of origin.
The territory is mostly flat with some uplands in the Murgia of Taranto in the North-West, the Tavoliere of Lecce in the middle and the undulations of the Serre in the South.
Thanks to its cultural, environmental and historical features, Salento has become the destination of awareness and quality tourism in the last few years, in contrast with the summer mass tourism. You will travel with the pizzica playing and you will feel surprised by the popular fervour that will enthral you during dancing nights.
