CARPINO Foggia (Puglia)
Art and culture, Food and wine
The place name comes from the Latin “caprelis” meaning “place of goats and roe deer’s farming”. In its territory there are marks of the Roman Empire, but the first document in which Carpino is mentioned dates back to 1144. The first settlement rose up around a castle (whose nowadays there are only few ruins) built up by Normans. Then it was under Swabians and later it was the fief of lots of families.
Carpino rises between the Varano lake and the Umbra forest and it’s part of the Gargano National Park. The town is one of the most interesting with its lovely architecture: twisting streets, alleyways and the typical houses with outside balconies leading to upper floors where families used to spend some time outdoors. For what concerns history and art you’ll come up in lovely churches taking a stroll around the historic centre and you can’t fail to miss the archaeological finds of the Roman bathing terms and necropolis. For what concerns nature indeed, Minutillo Grottoes are very interesting.
