FOGGIA Foggia (Puglia)
Business, Sun and sea, Art and culture, Nature and welness
Probably the name of Foggia comes from the Latin “fovea” that means “catch basin”. The first settlements dates back to the Neolithic age when people exploited already the Tavoliere plain and its richness although it was a marshy and malarial area. It was drained only between the XI and XII centuries with the Normans so that the soil improved. With Frederick II and the Anjous, Foggia increased its trades and its administrative importance. The Aragones exploited the strategic position of Foggia for sheep transhumance imposing a tax on shepherds so that royal revenues increased but the local shepherds became more and more poor. But with the Unification of Italy the tax was lifted and the town perked up again. During the Second World War it was an important railway and roadway junction, but it came under lots of bombings so after the war Foggia was rebuilt almost in its whole starting from the ruins of the old town.
Foggia is placed in the Capitanata, an historic district in the southern Apulia, and it stands in the heart of Tavoliere (the second largest plain of Italy). It’s a very important farming area thanks to its rich territory in which there are also lots of woods, whose most important is the Foresta Umbra. The coast plunged into the maquis where there are the Gargano beaches and the Tremiti Islands with their enchanting landscapes. The underground of Foggia it’s very interesting because throughout the years groundwaters created beautiful rocks and caves. Foggia preserves an important cultural and architectural heritage in its old town: the Cathedral, lots of churches in baroque and rococo style and underground passages that lead to churches’ crypts. For those who love good cooking in Foggia it’s possible to savour the typical dishes belonging to farming tradition: Cerignola and San Severo are two important centres for farming and wine productions.
