LUCERA Foggia (Puglia)
Business, Art and culture
Maybe the place name comes from the Etrurian “luc-eri” meaning “holy wood” because of a holy wood existing in the territory in the past; maybe it comes from the Latin “lux” meaning “light”; maybe it comes from the Greek “leuka eria” meaning “white wool” because of the renowned good wool quality in that area. Surely Lucera has ancient origins: Romans, Normans, Swabians, Anjous followed one another giving the town such a development to made it Chief city of Capitanata and Molise from 1579 to 1806. Nowadays is an important cultural and business centre of Foggia province.
Lucera is called “the key of Apulia” because of its strategic position and it’s one of the most blooming farming centre in Apulia. It is now part of the EDEN project (European Destinations of Excellence) and it has been accredited as “city of art”. In fact there are lots of historic and artistic marks all around the town: the Roman Amphitheatre, the Castle, built by Frederick II and then modified by Anjous, the Saracen watchtower, an example of Muslim art brought by Frederick II, the Cathedral, built on a previous mosque to celebrate the Anjous defeat over Saracens, and then the innumerable elegant palaces. The “cacc’ e mmitte” wine is the typical AOC production of Lucera.
