Storia comune di Manfredonia provincia di Foggia

The place name comes from Manfredi, son of Frederick II. According to the legend Diomedes, a Greek mythology hero, founded the old Siponto. It was inhabited by Byzantines, Longobards, Saracens, Normans and Swabians, but in 13th century an earthquake turned that place into an unhealthy marsh. So Manfredi built up a new town few km away from the marsh. Then Anjous, Aragoneses, Turks and Spanish fought for this place because of its strategic position overlooking the sea and because of its still enchanting beauty.

Manfredonia has got a vivid fishing port and a lively fish market, as lively as its tourism market. In fact the port is currently ferry terminal for some destinations of Gargano coast and for Tremiti Islands; apart from its port, lots of other towns are easy to reach from Manfredonia and furthermore the town is part of the Gargano National Park. Manfredonia is a perfect mixture of past and present: the castle, the cathedral, the medieval white houses and the elegant baroque palaces have not been spoilt by the modern buildings out of the city wall. Siponto is the bathing resort of Manfedonia, thanks to its golden beaches and its accommodations it is a very popular place in summertime. While during the winter you can enjoy the typical Carnival celebrations.
