MATTINATA Foggia (Puglia)
Sun and sea, Art and culture, Nature and welness
The ancient name was “Apeneste” that means “facing east” in Greek language referring to its position, but during Roman age its name was turned into “Matinum”. After an earthquake Matinum was abandoned and the survivors moved to the neighbouring area founding the present town. It was conquered by Byzantines, Longobards, Normans as happened to the rest of Apulia.
Mattinata is a lovely town rising on two hills surrounded by olive and almonds groves and overlooking the Adriatic sea. The white-rocked coast offers bays, marine grottoes, both pebble and sand beaches where you can enjoy the warm sun and the clear sea surrounded by maquis. The town is part of the Gargano National Park thus nature-lovers can have pleasant walks discovering the rare spontaneous orchids. But Mattinata it’s not sea and nature: past is still present here. Just outside of the town there are remains of a necropolis, close to the sea there are some Roman villas’ ruins and in the historic centre there are some “pagliai”, tall and rectangular houses built with stones.
