Storia comune di Monte Sant'Angelo provincia di Foggia

First information dealing with the town dates back to the 10th century, but it grew up and rose formerly with the Archangel’s apparitions. During the 5th century the Archangel appeared for three times in a grotto at 796 meters above the sea level (a fourth apparition happened in 1656) and all around the grotto the town started its development: lots of pilgrimages came in that area so that it was necessary to build up accommodation for them to stay until a small village rose up. As time goes by the town became a place of stay for crusaders going to the Holy Land. Nowadays the worship of Saint Michael is still source of a quiet tourism business.

Monte Sant’Angelo rises up on Gargano hill surrounded by hundred-year-old woods. The town is part of the Gargano National Park and it is situated on Umbra Forest edge overlooking the Manfredonia Gulf. In the historic centre it is still possible to admire the typical terraced houses all along the alleyways, the castle, the city wall, a stronghold and a baptistery. But Monte Sant’Angelo is definitely renowned for the grotto in which the Archangel Michael appeared starting such a deeply felt worship that the town and the sanctuary are pilgrimage sites receiving pilgrims from all over the world.
