PESCHICI Foggia (Puglia)
Sun and sea, Nature and welness, Sport & beauty
The place name comes from the Slavic language: the root “pes” refers to the sandy soil. The town was thus founded by Slav people arriving here to fight Saracens’ invasions in the 11th century. During the Norman age it became a fief for many families and during the Swabian age it suffered the quarrel between empire and papacy. It was then under Anjous and Aragoneses, always threatened with Saracens, and then it followed the Kingdom of Naples’ history until the unification of Italy. Nowadays Peschici is a blooming tourism centre.
In the northern Gargano promontory Peschici clamber up from its port to a karstic rock covered with woods and maquis. Peschici is a lovely town, definitely one of the most popular destination in summertime for its clear sea and for its beaches (FEE Blue Flag), both sandy and rocky, with bays and marine grottoes that you can reach only through sea. The rich seabed is perfect for those who loves underwater fishing, while for those who love trekking, biking, orienteering, hiking it’s useful to know that they can practise their favourite sport in the Gargano National Park. The historic centre is a pleasant maze of whitewashed alleyways where you can find little workshops or typical restaurants. Among the most important buildings there are the Swabian Castle, the watchtowers all along the coast and, few km away from the town, the Madonna di Loreto Sanctuary.
