SAN SEVERO Foggia (Puglia)
Nature and welness
According to the legend, the town was founded by Diomedes, a Greek mythology hero, who gave it the name of “Castrum Drionis” and it was a pagan town until the bishop of the near village of Siponto decided to entrust Catrm Drionis to the governor Severo. But the history tells that between the Longobards era and the Byzantine era on the Sacra Langobardorum Way a church was built up and then around it a village rose up with the name of Sancti Severini to honour Norico Severini, an abbot precursor of Saint Benedict. The village was on the way to Monte Sant'Angelo, thus it was full of people and traders and that's why it grew up until the 1500 when it became capital of Capitanata and Molise. In 1600 it suffered years of decay, but it pepped up again in 1700. Nowadays, together with Foggia, Cerignola and Manfredonia, it's a vivid trade centre.
San Severo stands in the Northern part of Tavoliere plain. In 2006 it has been accredited as “city of art”: in fact the historic centre is full of palaces, churches, monasteries in baroque style, so that the town is a good example of Northern Apulia baroque. All around the town, the countries are dotted with “masserie” (farmhouses), typical element of this landscape.
