TORREMAGGIORE Foggia (Puglia)
Food and wine
The place name probably comes from the original tower of the castle. During the fight between papacy and Manfred (Frederick II’s son) Dragonara and Fiorentino, two medieval villages, were destroyed. Thus the survivors villagers built up the currently town of Torremaggiore. In 1295 Knights Templar ruled the town and when this order was abolished the town was under Anjous, Aragoneses and Borbouns until the Unification of Italy. From 70’s the Torremaggiore started a great development in growing and producing wine and in olive oil producing.
Torremaggiore stands in the northern part of Tavoliere plain and here farming is definitely the mainstay of the local economy: its wines are renowned everywhere. The Castle and the Fiorentino Archaeological Park are the most interesting places: the Castle was originally a Norman tower, then enlarged over the years, and the Fiorentino Archaeological Park was an ancient medieval village where Frederick II died.
