VICO DEL GARGANO Foggia (Puglia)
Nature and welness
The place name comes from the Latin word “vicus” meaning “small village”. It was abandoned in 970 AC from the chief of a Slav people and then dominated by Normans, Swabians, Aragoneses and some important families of Naples.
Vico del Gargano rises in the heart of Umbra Forest so it is also part of the Gargano National Park. It is part of the Healthy Cities Network and of the Italian club “The Most Beautiful Villages In Italy”. Its historic centre is in ruins, but typical and picturesque at once: in fact it appears in a state of neglect, but improvements are enhancing its qualities. Features of the town are some underground private spaces designed for oil mills. The Castle looms over the town and the historic centre still guards the city walls (somewhere joined to the houses), lots of small ancient churches and “Palazzo della Bella”, a 20th century neo-Gothic building. Its position in Umbra Forest makes it the ideal destination for those who love trekking and orienteering activities and for those who love the sea San Menaio is a seaside resort with a clear blue sea.
