Storia comune di Carpignano Salentino provincia di Lecce
When Romans conquered Messapia territory in 267 BC they used to share the conquered lands among the most skilled soldiers. The territory corresponding to the current Carpignano was given to Carpinius, a roman soldier. Salentino refers to its location in Salento plain. Some menhir let us know that the town was already inhabited in prehistoric era. The territory was then under Romans, Byzantines and Longobards. During the Norman and Anjous era the village became a fief for lots of aristocratic families. Since 1663 to the beginning of 19th century Carpignano Salentino belonged to Ghezzi family.

Carpignano Salentino is part of “Grecìa salentina”, a group of 11 villages preserving the Greek dialect of Salento spread during the time of Byzantine Empire and nowadays officially recognised as a minority language by Italian government. A mark of Greek-Byzantine presence in those territories is Santa Cristina crypt (or Madonna delle Grazie crypt): it dates back to the 10th century and it is a brilliant example of Byzantine art in Salento guarding the Apulia oldest frescoes. The core of the town is the main square with its elegant palaces such as Palazzo Ducale Ghezzi. Don’t miss a visit to Madonna della Grotta Sanctuary, built after the apparition of the Virgin to a blind men in 1568.
