CASTRI DI LECCE Lecce (Puglia)
Art and culture
The place name comes from “castrum” referring to “stronghold”. Probably it rose up in Roman era as a small settlement in an area that was already inhabited in Bronze Age as some menhir can show. In ‘300 it belonged to some families that shared the land in two: Castrifrancone and Castriguarino. Later on it was a land of refuge for some people escaping from Saracens’ invasions. At the end of feudality the two villages merged together and turned into an only town with the name of Castri di Lecce.
Castri is a small farming town skilled at olive, tobacco, grain and flower farming. The most interesting buildings to visit are the elegant Santa Maria della Visitazione Church and Palazzo Vernazza.
