Storia comune di Castro provincia di Lecce

The place name comes from the Latin word “Castrum” meaning “stronghold”. According to the tradition it was founded by Cretans or Greeks. For sure it was a Messapian centre and in 123 BC it was turned into a Roman village under the name of “Castrum Minervae” because there was a temple dedicated to the goddess. After the fall of the Roman Empire it was a Byzantium property. In 682 was chosen as Episcopal centre. Byzantines and Normans fought for it and later it was under Venetians control. With the Spanish government it suffered a moment of decline, especially with the abolition of feudality and of diocese in 1818. Nowadays Castro is definitely a wonderful destination for those who want to spend a relaxing holiday surrounded by an enchanting landscape.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Castro provincia di Lecce

Castro is a lovely fishing town standing on a sheer promontory and overlooking the sea. It is divided into two parts, Castro Alta and Castro Marina. Castro Alta is the ancient core of the town where there are the 16th city walls and the castle, a stronghold that was in the list of the most important castles of Anjous kingdom for its position and its strength. But what makes Castro an attractive town is Castro Marina: here the sea is clear and clean (so much to get the FEE Blue Flag in 2009), from its gentle slopes you can admire enchanting views of the Adriatic sea, the little harbour can accommodate lots of boats and the coast here is littered with evocative grottoes whose most famous one is definitely “Grotta della Zinzulusa”, the most accessible cave known for its stalagmites and stalactites. Furthermore since 2006 Castro is part of the Regional Park “Costa Otranto-Santa Maria di Leuca-Tricase”.
