CAVALLINO Lecce (Puglia)
Art and culture
The origins of the place name are unsure. Probably it comes from the Greek word “kabas” referring to some soldiers dealing with the tax collection: maybe near the town there was a custom. The territory was inhabited by Messapian between the 8th and 6th centuries BC, as some archaeological findings have showed. Probably the Messapian village was destroyed by Taranto in 470 BC. Later on, some Basilian monks occupied the territory and found the village of Caballinus. Since that period the town followed the Apulia history and its dominions (Longobards, Byzantines, Normans, Anjous and Aragoneses) until the unification of Italy.
Cavallino is a small town 5 km away from Lecce province. Farming and craftwork are the mainstay of local economy: large vineyards, olive groves and strips of almond trees loom all around the countries dotted with typical dry-stone walls. Although it is situated in the hinterland, few minutes driving are enough to reach the beautiful Adriatic coast and its clear sea. Among the most interesting buildings in town the Castle shows up over the dominican church and convent, built on a previous basilian crypt, as interesting as the castle. Madonna del monte Chapel should be visited as well: it was built exactly where a farmer found out an icon of the Virgin and Child, probably buried during the iconoclastic conflicts between the 8th and the 9th centuries.
