CORIGLIANO D'OTRANTO Lecce (Puglia)
Sun and sea, Art and culture
Incorrectly the name of Corigliano was thought to come from the word “cuore” (“heart” in Italian); actually it comes from “chòrion” meaning “village” in Greek dialect of Salento. The foundation of the town dates back to the Magna Graecia age, but some says it was founded in Messapian age. The first document in which Corigliano is mentioned dates back to 1192. Certainly in 9th century some basilian monks occupied the territory spreading Greek language and byzantine culture. But De’ Monti family was definitely the most important family for the town: they ruled from 1465 to 1649.
