Storia comune di Corigliano D'Otranto provincia di Lecce

Incorrectly the name of Corigliano was thought to come from the word “cuore” (“heart” in Italian); actually it comes from “chòrion” meaning “village” in Greek dialect of Salento. The foundation of the town dates back to the Magna Graecia age, but some says it was founded in Messapian age. The first document in which Corigliano is mentioned dates back to 1192. Certainly in 9th century some basilian monks occupied the territory spreading Greek language and byzantine culture. But De’ Monti family was definitely the most important family for the town: they ruled from 1465 to 1649.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Corigliano D'Otranto provincia di Lecce

Corigliano d’Otranto is part of “Grecìa salentina”, a group of 11 villages preserving the Greek dialect of Salento spread during the time of Byzantine Empire and nowadays officially recognised as a minority language by Italian government. Saint Nicola Church and Lucchetti Arch are some of the most interesting buildings. De’ Monti Castle is impressive as interesting because it was one of the stronghold resisting to Saracens’ invasions in 1480. Among the archaeological findings there are a “specchia” (a dolmen covered with mounds) and a temple dedicated to Vesta, a Roman mythology goddess.
