Cutrofiano rises in the heart of Salento Peninsula and it is a vivid farming centre especially for wine and olive oil production. Its historic centre has been modified over the years, but yet it still guards its original appearance in its flagging narrow streets and alleyways. Here there are the most important buildings of the town: Madonna delle Nevi Church and Palazzo Ducale, built in 1600 on a previous castle. Few km away from the town it can be interesting to visit the little hypogeum San Giovanni Crypt and Parco dei fossili (fossils’park), a park where fossil shells are still guarded and studied. Cutrofiano is renowned for pottery: the soil is rich in clay and thus pottery production is an art here and it is famous thanks to the pottery festival that every year takes place in the town. Cutrofiano is part of “Grecìa salentina”, a group of 11 villages preserving the Greek dialect of Salento spread during the time of Byzantine Empire and nowadays officially recognised as a minority language by Italian government.
