GALATINA Lecce (Puglia)
Nature and welness, Food and wine
Definitely the town has a Greek origin, but there are few marks of it. The first document in which Galatina is mentioned dates back to 1178 called as Sancti Pietri in Galatina: the tradition tells that Saint Peter stopped for a rest in this area during his trip from Antioch to Rome so the town was called in that way until the Unification of Italy when it turned its name into Galatina only. In 1200 the town was an important centre for Greek culture, idiom and rituals, although Normans spread Latin culture. From 14th century on the town was a fief for lots of families and each one for short periods, but between 17th and 19th centuries Galatina expanded with that luxurious palaces that confirmed it nowadays as a “city art”.
Galatina is the town in which Latin and Greek cultures harmoniously coexist together, mingling everything with the magic and esoteric ceremonies of “Tarantismo” (an alleged, possibly deadly envenomation, popularly believed to result from the bite of tarantula spider). Up lately, on June 29th (town’s patronal festival) all the tarantulees (women in heightened excitability and restlessness because bitten by a tarantula) met in Saint Paul Chapel to drink the water of the chapel’s well considered as a miracle water for the recovery of the bite. Nowadays those ancient ceremonies are commemorated through the typical dance of “pizzica”. Apart from “taranta” ceremonies, in Galatina there are so many interesting buildings that in 2005 the town has been declared a “city art”. One of the most important buildings is Santa Caterina Church, an enchanting example of Pugliese Romanesque; then there are Chiesa Matrice, dedicated to Saint Paul and Saint Peter, and lots of elegant palaces built in Baroque style. Furthermore it is still possible to admire the three doors of the town and three basilian crypts. Noha, Collemeto and Santa Barbara are the three hamlets of Galatina, very important for wine production, in fact the town is part of the National Association of Wine.
