According to the legend, already before the Trojan War there was a settlement called “Sybar” corresponding to the current territory of Lecce. It was founded by Messapi and then was occupied by many peoples because of its strategic position. So throughout the centuries the town had been occupying by: Japigi, Ostrogoths, Greeks, Romans, Turks and then Normans that turned Lecce into a great commercial centre expanding its territory. Afterwards, with the Spanish government, it became an open building site because of the many private and public building commissions. The province occupies the area called Penisola Salentina, almost halfway from the Adriatic sea and the Ionian sea, and it stands on a plain territory. It’s called the “Athens of Apulia” and the “Florence of South Italy” thanks to its many monuments, in particular thanks to its unique style called “barocco leccese” (baroque style of Lecce): buildings in barocco leccese style are made of a reddish calcareous stone very mouldable. In the background the typical Mediterranean landscape gives to the town an enchanting beauty. Lecce boasts a vivid cultural life and in summertime it fills up with tourists that can enjoy also its seashores: San Cataldo, Frigole, Torre Chianca, Torre Rinalda, Casalabate.Aree di interesse turistico del comune di Lecce
