Storia comune di Maglie provincia di Lecce
The place name should come from “Malle” or “Mallia” or “Mallie” referring to “hill”. The first settlements date back to prehistory, but the town was founded in 9th century joining three villages together. During Normans age it was part of Lecce County and then it became a fief for some families whose most important one was the last one, Capece family, who really developed the town.

Maglie is situated in the heart of Salento plain. It is an important railway and road junction and it is a stop-off to reach the best seaside resorts of Salento. Its historic centre is a maze of narrow streets and alleyways where it is possible to admire elegant palaces and striking churches built in “barocco leccese” (Lecce Baroque) and carved into “Lecce stone”, a kind of limestone very soft and malleable. The most important buildings built in this way are the Dome or Colleggiata Church and Palazzo Baronale. The town has ancient origins as some dolmens and “specchie” (dolmens covered with mounds) show.
