Melendugno is a small town consisting of six hamlets: Borgane, Roca Vecchia, San Foca, Torre Specchia, Torre dell’Orso and Torre Sant’Andrea. Roca Vecchia is the ancient core of the town and it is very important for its archaeological sites. San Foca, Torre Specchia, Torre dell’Orso and Torre Sant’Andrea still guard the watchtowers against Saracens’ invasions and they are the seaside resorts of Melendugno: here there are large golden beaches, rocky bays, sea stacks, a clear sea winner of FEE Blue Flag that every summer attract lots of tourists. Near Torre dell’Orso there is the “Grotta della poesia” (Poems’ grotto), a cave whose sides are painted with prehistoric and messapian inscriptions. But there’s a legend as well about this grotto: once upon a time a beautiful princess went to bath in this grotto and lots of poets had inspiration through her for their poems. In town there are some interesting buildings such as Santa Maria Assunta Church, San Niceta Abbey, D’Amely Palace. Furthermore there are two dolmens, Placa and Gurgulante, witnesses of human presence in prehistoric age.
