Storia comune di Melpignano provincia di Lecce

When Romans conquered Messapia territory in 267 BC they used to share the conquered lands among the most skilled soldiers. The territory corresponding to the current Melpignano was given to the roman soldier Melpinius. After the fall of the Roman Empire it was under Greek-Byzantine influence and during the feudalism it was a fief for lots of families. After the feudalism Melpignano was joined to Castrignano dè Greci, but in 1837 the two towns became independent.

Melpignano is part of “Grecìa salentina”, a group of 11 villages preserving the Greek dialect of Salento spread during the time of Byzantine Empire and nowadays officially recognized as a minority language by Italian government. It is part of Italian associations for the eco-friendly management of the town and for the preservation of local culture and traditions.
