MURO LECCESE Lecce (Puglia)
Business, Food and wine
Probably the name refers to the Messapian megalithic city walls (“muro” means “wall” in Italian). Menhirs and other archaeological finds shows that the territory was inhabited since the prehistory. But the first inhabitants officially recognised from history are the Messapian who built up a village in 4th century BC that later was destroyed in 3th century BC from Romans. In 1156 Guglielmo Bosco from Norman dynasty declared himself as first prince of Muro Leccese. During Anjous period it was a fief for some families until the unification of Italy.
Muro Leccese is an interesting town especially for its history. It’s definitely one of the greatest centre of messapian and byzantine cultures and of Baroque art as well. The town bears the witnesses of Messapian civilization in its megalithic city walls and menhirs. Santa Marina and Santa Maria di Miggione churches are the marks of byzantine culture and the Dominican Church, Crocefisso Church and Palazzo dei Principe are the best examples of Barocco Leccese (Lecce Baroque) of 16th century.
