Storia comune di Nardo' provincia di Lecce

The place name comes from the Greek word “nar” referring to “water” and turned later in the Latin “Neretum”. There are some legends about the foundation of the town: some says that it was founded where a bull, beating its hoof on the soil, spouted a water spring; another legend tells about Nereo, a Greek mythology marine god. But history tells that the territory was inhabited since the prehistoric period (as Baia di Uluzzo and Baia del Cavallo display) and that it was a Messapian centre. It was then conquered by Romans in 269 BC and by Byzantines and Longobards. From 1055 on Nomans, Swabians and Anjous followed one another until Acquaviva family who ruled until 18th century.

Informazioni turistiche comune di Nardo' provincia di Lecce

Nardò is definitely one of the most renowned tourist destination of Salento because of its wide and various territory and especially thanks to its seaside resorts (Santa Maria al Bagno, Santa Caterina, Sant’Isidoro and Porto Selvaggio) offering a clean sea, fine and golden sand beaches and cliffs and rocky bays as well. Nature lovers should not miss a visit to the Regional Park “Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano” where landscape biodiversity is strictly preserved and sea life is safeguarded. In Baia di Uluzzo and in Baia del Cavallo there are some prehistoric graffiti considered to be the first graffiti still existing in Europe. Nardò has been and it still is an interesting cultural centre especially for Baroque art: Piazza Antonio Salandra or the small churches spread all around the town are a good example of it. Other interesting buildings are the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, the Castle and “Osanna”, a mysterious octagonal building, perhaps a votive altar or perhaps a pagan symbol. All along the coast there are some 15th century watchtowers dating back to Saracens’ invasions.
