NEVIANO Lecce (Puglia)
Business, Food and wine
A story tells about the origins of Neviano: after the Roman invasion, inhabitants from a small village, Fulcignano, took refuge on a near hill that was often snow-covered: hence the name of Neviano, from the Italian word “neve” meaning “snow”. The first document in which the town is mentioned dates back to 1269, although the development of the town took place later with Del Balzo family. Neviano had a very rich soil and that’s why lots of families followed one another until the abolition of feudalism.
Neviano is a small healthy town with olive groves and vineyards. In town there are some interesting monuments such as the Castle, Madonna delle Nevi Temple and San Michele Arcangelo Church. Just few km away, the town boasts an interesting rupestrian settlement, San Nicola Macugnano Abbey, made up of four caves (only one is accessible) and a tower where there is a fresco of Saint Nicola.
