Otranto occupies the site of the ancient Hydrus or Hydruntum, a town of Greek origin. During the byzantine domination it was so important to be called “Byzantium of Salento”. After Norman, Anjou and aragonese dominations, Turks attacked the town: the bishop, the clergymen and the people took refuge in the cathedral, but they were murdered by the Turks; 800 survivor prisoners died murdered on a hill. Otranto pepped up only with the Kingdom of Naples. Otranto overlooks on the Straits that takes its name, Otranto Channel, on the eastern side of the Adriatic sea and that’s why the town is also called “Door to the East”: it’s the most eastern Italian town. Its climate it’s mild and in summertime the cafés, the little shops in the old town are full of tourists. In the old town you will walk on downhill streets and on narrow and twisting alleyways in which Spanish, Andalusian and baroque styles get together to shape one of the best Italian “borgos”. It’s interesting to notice that there are some granite balls setting on the houses’ edges: those are the balls that Turks threw on Otranto in 1480.
